  • THREE FACEBOOK TIPS FOR YOUR BUSINESS

I had the pleasure of presenting to the East End Women’s Network last night at the beautiful Trumpets on the Bay in Eastport, NY. I shared some basic social media tips and resources including three quick steps to get more from Facebook for your business.

    The three steps are:

1.) Check your Facebook Insights to see the best days and times to post. By scheduling your posts at these times you’ll increase your reach and the likelihood that your fans will engage with your social media activity.

2.) Use Facebook as your Page at least three times per week. Engaging with other pages by liking their posts and sharing valuable content will increase your brand’s visibility and build relationships with your professional network.

3.) Ensure your About section features the most important information about your company including your product and/or service and where you’re located, whether online or offline. This area is indexed by search engines & can get you found.

Download the tips on this handout and keep them handy for when you’re ready to start marketing your business on Facebook.

  • AIN’T THAT SOMETHING…WHY SPELLING AND GRAMMAR MATTER IN SOCIAL MEDIA

Is it they’re, their or there? Spelling and grammar matter in social media. When posting as your brand online it is very important that you’re using correct spelling and grammar. This simple act shows your professionalism and is certainly appreciated by your followers who know better. It also avoids miscommunication because readers will not have to guess what you intended to say.

The next time you’re not sure if you’re spelling a word correctly or using proper grammar be sure to take the time to get it correct. Hiring a social media manager can be another way to ensure that your message is being properly formatted and proofread to avoid mistakes.

The Grammarly handbook is a helpful resource to brush up on your spelling and grammar basics: http://www.grammarly.com/handbook/

  • “WHO’S VIEWED YOUR PROFILE” IS THE LITTLE RED DRESS OF LINKEDIN

You walk into a room full of attractive people, all dressed very similarly except for that one woman in the little red dress. The little red dress is an immediate way to get someone’s attention without saying a word. The Who’s Viewed Your Profile feature on LinkedIn has the same effect and you can use this to your advantage to get noticed on LinkedIn. linkedin who's viewed your profile

If you’re looking for employment, trying to pitch your latest product or service to a major buyer, or looking to rekindle an old business relationship the subtleness of showing up in the Who’s Viewed Your Profile list of another member’s LinkedIn account can be a great way to establish yourself as top-of-mind to someone with whom you may or may not already be connected.

The little red dress may not seal the deal but it can be a first point of contact, turning a cold lead into a warm one. It can also be a reason for someone with whom you’d like to connect to view your profile if your headline appears interesting enough.

To use this feature be sure to enable others to see that you’ve viewed their profile in LinkedIn, instructions are below.

1.) In LinkedIn click on Privacy & Settings at the top right of the screen under your profile photo
2.) Go to Profile and under Privacy Control select the option Select what others see when you’ve viewed their profile
3.) Be sure your name and headline is selected (the first option)

Voila! Start finding those interesting people and enticing them with your little red dress!

  • REMARKS ON THE BOSTON MARATHON EXPLOSIONS

It is tough to know what to say in situations like what happened yesterday at the Boston Marathon. I found these remarks from comedian Patton Oswalt and found them very fitting. I’m praying for Boston, the runners, the first responders, the doctors treating the wounded, and anyone affected by the tragic events yesterday.

“I remember, when 9/11 went down, my reaction was, “Well, I’ve had it with humanity.”

But I was wrong. I don’t know what’s going to be revealed to be behind all of this mayhem. One human insect or a poisonous mass of broken sociopaths.

But here’s what I DO know. If it’s one person or a HUNDRED people, that number is not even a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a percent of the population on this planet. You watch the videos of the carnage and there are people running TOWARDS the destruction to help out. (Thanks FAKE Gallery founder and owner Paul Kozlowski for pointing this out to me). This is a giant planet and we’re lucky to live on it but there are prices and penalties incurred for the daily miracle of existence. One of them is, every once in awhile, the wiring of a tiny sliver of the species gets snarled and they’re pointed towards darkness.

But the vast majority stands against that darkness and, like white blood cells attacking a virus, they dilute and weaken and eventually wash away the evil doers and, more importantly, the damage they wreak. This is beyond religion or creed or nation. We would not be here if humanity were inherently evil. We’d have eaten ourselves alive long ago.

So when you spot violence, or bigotry, or intolerance or fear or just garden-variety misogyny, hatred or ignorance, just look it in the eye and think, “The good outnumber you, and we always will.”
